Finding Quiet Geology and Layered Light in South Dakota’s Rugged Heart
My first visit to Badlands National Park was 11 years ago, and I only spent a single afternoon there. That was definitely not enough time to adequately photograph or even begin to comprehend this amazing landscape. Since then, I've returned two more times, and every single trip leaves me with the distinct feeling that there is still so much more left to be revealed beneath these ancient layers.
I shot this during my second visit back in 2021, right in the middle of COVID. Back then, I was living the van life, roaming the American West in my Sprinter and out enjoying my photography almost every day. Rolling through South Dakota with no set timeline allowed me to slow down, watch how the soft, diffused light accentuated the muted pastel striations, and compress the scene to bring out the incredible depth of those rolling foreground mounds against the rugged spires behind them.
Geologically speaking, the Badlands are a living canvas. The striking colorful bands you see deposited across these eroded mounds represent millions of years of shifting climate—from ancient tropical seas to floodplain swamps and volcanic ash layers. Today, the park is eroding at a rate of about one inch per year, which is remarkably fast in geological terms. It’s a sobering thought that the exact framing you capture today will physically look different just a few decades down the line.
Photographing a place with this much scale is a lesson in patience and perspective. Moving through the West in a camper van taught me that the best landscape shots rarely happen when you're rushing through on an afternoon itinerary. They happen when you give yourself room to wander, let the light settle, and allow the terrain to tell its own ancient story.
