Church Rock Sandstone Butte in Winter
Church Rock and La Sal Mountains, Utah
Church Rock rises from the red dust like a quiet sentinel as I roll on highway 191 into southern Utah on my most recent road trip. I found the formation in the soft desert light, when the sandstone takes on a warm, honeyed glow and long shadows sharpened the rock’s carved edges. Parked in the Sprinter a short walk from the base, I made slow, deliberate exposures, looking for the angle where the spire separated from the horizon and the surrounding scrub felt small and still.
The light that evening was what I travel for: clean, directional, and patient. Clouds thinned to reveal bands of color that slide across the rock, deepening the crevices and lifting the textures. I used a low, grounded compositions to emphasize Church Rock’s vertical presence against the vast desert sky — a solitary place that seems almost built rather than eroded.
