Midnight, Moonlight and Stars at Double Arch

There is a specific kind of silence you find when you’re alone in the desert at night.

Thirteen years ago, I took a long, solitary drive from California—15 hours in a single day—to reach Arches National Park for the very first time and just in time to witness sunset ar Park Avenue. I spent the next couple of days just wandering through the park, day and night, completely taking it all in.

I remember standing beneath the Double Arch all by myself around midnight, feeling incredibly small under the weight of the moonlit sky. The moon was bright and clear, and the stars were piercing through the sandstone arches creating a moment of stillness that I feel every time I view this photo.

I recently returned to the raw files from that first visit to re-process this image. These days I have modern tools for photo processing and have also become more proficient at post processing them. Looking at it now, it takes me right back to that quiet, humbling night of discovery.
