Finding the Transient Abstract Textures of Cottonball Basin
Death Valley has a way of ruining you for other landscapes. Back when I lived in the Bay Area, that eight-hour slog down and across California was a ritual I repeated year after year, and honestly, I miss it now that I'm out in Texas where it’s a three day drive away. The park's ridiculous diversity shows up as fantastic new surprises season by season, year by year—from wonders like Lake Manly filling Badwater Basin to the quiet, hidden corners few visiting tourists ever bother to find.
A few miles north of Furnace Creek lies Cottonball Basin, a photographer’s playground that demands absolute reverence. It is an achingly fragile ecosystem where a single careless footstep can instantly obliterate intricate salt formations that nature lovingly carving out.
Wandering around the valley floor there feels less like standard landscape photography and more like hunting for ghosts. I stumbled upon this specific abstract salt structure just once, and looking back, I'm entirely convinced I could retrace my steps a hundred times and never find it again—hell, the extreme heat, winds, rains and foot traffic might have erased it completely by now, or possibly morphed it into something even more fantastical to point our cameras at!
