Morning Light at Cannon Beach: Capturing Oregon's Sea Stacks

Morning Mist and Monoliths: Canon Beach

Golden Hour Light and Decisive Timing at Cannon Beach, Oregon

There is a specific kind of magic along the Pacific Northwest coast early in the morning. On my first trip to Cannon Beach in northern Oregon, I set up along the shoreline as the morning light began to burn through the dense marine layer. The sheer scale of the sea stacks carved out by relentless surf is enough to command your full attention, but the trick to photographing iconic landmarks like these is waiting for a narrative element to bring the frame to life.

As the golden glow hit the textured rock faces, a seagull glided right through the open sky between the formations. It was one of those classic "decisive moment" frames where light, composition, and luck intersect in a split second. Looking back, this shot comes from a brief period before I switched from my brief period using Nikon kit back to Olympus gear in 2014, making it a unique snapshot in both my journey and my gear history.
